Last night was the mandatory pilots' meeting followed by a beer and Pizza welcome dinner sponsored by XU Aviation. Located at the London, ON airport XU is the premiere composite repair shop in the area and can handle all of your maintenance needs!
The forecast for the day was good in terms of thermal strength and convective height, but there were a few wrinkles to factor in as well. B/S ratio was showing a 3 with wind at +15 kts on the ground and +20 kts at 5000 ft, smoke reducing visibility to 5-6 miles, an approaching cold front with severe thunderstorms expected to arrive at 5 pm and the expected cu were sparse and the air was drying.
In the end the wrinkles prevailed and the day was cancelled at 2 PM. The likelihood of getting enough pilots flying minmum distance was low and the likelihood of landing out a lot of gliders just in front of a line of severe storms was high.
We'll try again tomorrow.
