Its a task setters nightmare. The Skysight.io cloudbase prediction is uncertain but blue, and the weather outside the window is clearly very clear. And its the last day where we really really dont want everyone landing out at Tokoroa.
Anyway, we will grid and wait and see how it goes.
Day 6 and back to the Enterprise format again. A list of Bonus Turnpoints, plus 1 pt per KM from a full FAI triangle. Flying FAI triangles out of Auckland is notoriously difficult because of the open ocean to the west and the open ocean to the east. This has a slight dampening effect on the ability to sucessfully squeeze a 28% leg of a triangle. There was much lively discussion in the bar after yesterdays flights. All sorts of ideas thrown around and discussions of what we could try next. Today we're going to try a bit of a comparison and run the day as a formal AAT. Well, maybe the task area shapes are unusual for a New Zealand Contest and the min distance is pretty short. It's over. The westerly gales have blown themselves out and finally we can set a real Contest day, actually from Drury and actualy in something approaching thermal weather. And what a day. The weather predictions got it wrong in the best possible way. Forecast showers did not appear and the cloudbase was much better than expected. We went to Raglan ! The west coast ridge is spectacular and in a 35 kt wind it goes like a train. There's a "task", but iuts Enterprise !!! Who needs a Task ??? Todays task is turn up. fly and maybe have some fun. We'll award a few points for that. In the meantime, Tim Bromhead, in BA flew 700km. Who needs a task ?

We de-camped to Thames again and came up with a Pilot Selected Turnpoint task. Scoring is haphazard and random, but boiled down to 50 points per TP reached, plus some weird and wonderful vague plans for awarding speed points. The wind blew hard, and the smoke from the fires in Victoria and NSW made the sky an ominous shade of yellow. At the end of the day, Maurice Honey from Auckland turned up in Thames, in his PW5 after a "high" speed bash down the ridge and proving yet again that SIFOW. Anyway...

The beauty of an Enterprise contest is that we can basically make things up on the fly. Tasks are poorly defined and the rules arent clear. So theres plenty of scope for creative interpretation of what you're "supposed" to do to win points. Check the task sheet for the rough guidelines of what pilots might do today and expect the unexpected. Anyway, the scores for the day are up. So we're at Thames. Early starters (mostly with turbos) already Launched from Drury and have started to hit the Kaimai ridge. Nine gliders currently rigging in Thames. Looks like we're in for a fun day.
