Today we had the briefing in the air conditioned club rooms which was appreciated. Some comments from yesterday:"I flew faster than I've ever flown before, and at a speed that would have been a world record a few years ago. Today I finished mid-field.""Boy when you guys turn on good weather, you really turn it on.""I decided to fly faster today so I cruised at 120kts and eased off a bit when I got down to 7000'."Lars broke Bruce's record by flying at 177kph raw and 168.2kph handicapped. His stat...

After two record breaking days and forecast of 50 knot winds today we have a day off.The results from yesterday speak for themselves.Unfortunately the day did not end well for Grant Hudson (son of contest director John). He had a landing accident in his Pik. He walked away unhurt but the glider was badly damaged. We have a briefing at 10.15, more later.

Launching started at 1.30pm as planned and finished at 2.45, with 6 tugs. The last (Standard Class) gate opens at 2.18pm. Sorry that should be 3.18pm, blame it on the heat.Launching was pretty uneventful apart from the heat. The 55 again raised a cheer when he didn't drop a wing on launch.Simon Brown landed back before his gate opened and didn't relaunch, so the airways will be a little quieter today :-)The sky is looks spectacular with high Cus in all directions. It was blue here when launching...

The winning pilots yesterday all complained that they had trouble getting down without exceeding VNE. Peter Temple made the comment that if people didn’t have fun yesterday they should take up golf. Pilots had average climbs of over 7kts and just over 20% thermalling. Peter left a 12kt climb at 13000’ 120km away for final glide and that was too much.Bruce’s speed of (170.9 raw) 162.3kph handicapped is the fastest ever flown in an Australian Nationals.Today we have a trough to the North which may...

The grid is launched and the last gate will open at 2.27pm 30mins after the last launch. The open class who launched last have been changed to the B task (which is the same as the A task for the little wings). So 18m are flying 527km the rest 465km.A sea breeze is predicted at 5.45pm today. The sniffer was reporting climbs to 3000' when BE from Balaklava came on the radio to say he was at 8000' to the west so they launched the grid starting at 12.15 as planned. PIT did no launches today due to a...

AE has just landed, we think he has either abandoned the task, missed a turn, or set a new New Zealand record. His gate opened at 13.52 for a 512km task.No reports of outlandings.

There was only 8 mins between the end of briefing and the start of gridding. The briefing started at 10.15 with predictions of an early start and gridding at 11am with first launch at Noon. The sniffer launched at 11.45 and quickly reported good climbs. The fleet was launched and the last gate opened at 13.52. The gliders are getting good heights, (11000' was forecast). We needed a trigger temperature of 31 degrees and a maximum of 40 is forecast for Renmark. The initial task was to be West to the...

At briefing on Thursday the question was asked when randomweighing would start. 'Today' was the answer, and true to their word severalgliders were pulled aside and weighed in the hangar. One consequence of beingweighed in the hangar is that the 2% buffer for outdoor weighing does not applyso a ‘sudden death’ penalty applies. This was the case for the Finnish pilotflying CW who was found to be approx 18kg over and received a penalty of 333points. Pilots do have the option of a voluntary weigh eac...
